DIY Passion Cross - Good Friday Activity
In the midst of the trying time of COVID-19, we are having to be creative. Personally, one of my favorite images to really take time and contemplate is the cross - especially during Holy Week.
I wanted to ensure that my congregation was able to take the time to contemplate this year and decided that this would be an awesome way to consider the brutal deadness of the cross. Here is the step-by-step process (also found in the video below).
How to Make the DIY Passion Cross
1. Find the right spot. Start your cross by finding the perfect spot for your cross to be located. I personally did mine on a section of my porch that I knew wouldn't have much traffic. Important: It is essential that it remain in that place until Sunday, so make sure it's a safe, low traffic area.
2. Go outside (praise God!) and find some good sticks and branches of various lengths. This is important for getting people outside (stay-at-home doesn't have to mean stay-in-home, your yard is fair game!) The size of the cross is up to you. I decided to make mine fairly small. The longer branches were around two-feet and the shorter around a foot to a foot-and-a-half.
3. Make it yours. Begin to lay down your branches in whatever order you see fit. Allow your creativity to take hold and really consider how you want it to look.
4. Pray. Consider the pain of the cross. Think about the dead branches that you've picked up. Consider what it means that Christ is the vine and we are the branches. Why, then, are the branches what make up Christ's cross? What did Christ have to do for us on the cross? What does all of this mean?
5. Share your cross with your community. For us, we are planning to share the crosses to our Facebook page by having people tag our page and use the hashtag #ChristconquersCOVID. A bit cheeky, but also truly memorable and powerfully true. This is vital: we aren't doing this for ourselves alone but instead as a community together.
Let us know how your cross turned out! Be sure to tune back in on Sunday for Part 2, where we get to finish up this painful cross with the power of Easter Sunday.
Be blessed, Wavemakers.
