World Communion Sunday : The Trouble With Tradition

Feel free to watch the video version of this sermon by clicking here .  Welcome to Making Waves! We are so glad to have you back for another week of ministry. This past Sunday was a wonderful Sunday, and I hope that any of you reading this were able to participate in this wonderful event. The first Sunday of October is the special event of World Communion Sunday. It is on this Sunday that all Christians across this world will be taking communion at the same time (give or take a few hours). For those of you that know me, you know how much I love this particular celebration. I am a huge supporter of communion and of its importance. As many of you know, Logan and I were recently married and it was a major priority for me to make sure that we took and served communion at the wedding. But sometimes I tell people of how much I love the act of communion and they might be prone to roll their eyes or shift uncomfortably. Some people just don’t care much for the special act. So, I...

Overcoming Impossible : And They Were Astounded

Feel free to check out the video version of this sermon here . Welcome back to another week here on Making Waves! We are so glad that you are back again to join us for the final installment on the Overcoming Impossible sermon series. If you haven’t had the chance to catch up, I highly encourage you to watch or read through the past several weeks of this series. For those of you who aren’t interested in that, here’s a quick recap. We started off this series by taking a look at the Sermon on the Mount. We’d heard before how difficult these commands are in this scripture. How impossible it was to follow the teachings of Jesus in these commandments in particular. The first week we looked at the Beatitudes, which are those sayings of Jesus that start with “Blessed are those who…” We learned that through these hard sayings Jesus was trying to teach us to be humble in every way. In our spirit, in our lives, in our faith, in our wealth, everything. The second week we took a lo...

Overcoming Impossible : Radical Prayer

Feel free to check out the video version of this sermon here .             Welcome back to yet another week here on Making Waves! We are so glad to have you back with us for the third part in this new series we are taking on. The title of this series is Overcoming Impossible and we are focusing on the Sermon on the Mount from the gospel of Matthew. This passage has been occasionally refereed to as an impossible list of demands from Christ. And, if we didn’t know better, we might be tempted to agree with them after the last two weeks of study we have had. God has called us to a life full of humility and putting other first. We learned that Jesus came to complete the laws of Moses and make them even harder to live up to. This week we are going to take on the Lord’s Prayer. It’s a prayer that all of us over at Pelham UMC have memorized and I’m sure that most of you out there could say the same. It’s an incredibly important pr...

Overcoming Impossible : Well, Yeah, But...

Check out the live recording of this sermon here ! Good morning!   It’s wonderful to see that you came back after last week’s hard-hitter of a sermon. I knew when tackling the Sermon on the Mount that this would certainly not be easy. You could say it would seem impossible. ;D <-winky face Anyway, last week we looked at the first part of the Sermon on the Mount, as recounted in Matthew’s gospel. We looked at how Jesus is calling us to do the impossible. In the Beatitudes, Jesus elaborated on the importance of humility. When we discussed this, we thought it seemed impossible, but let me go ahead and tell you, compared to this week’s lesson, humility is the easy part. Before we get too deep into that, let’s dive into the Word. We have a long one this week, and it may benefit you to go back and read Exodus 20:1-17, as well.             The Law and the Prophets 17  “Do not think that I have come to abolish the...
