Hipster Jesus : Self, Selfies & Self-Help

For those of you just joining us, feel free to take a quick listen to the past two weeks to catch up, they are both located on this blog. For those of you that read that and said, “nah,” here is a quick re-cap. We are doing a series called Hipster Jesus. So, what’s a hupster? Well, a hipster is someone who goes against the norms and trends of a current generation’s standards. Some of us may know these hipsters by their parent’s name: hippie. Now, I’m not saying that I believe that Jesus is interested in the same activities as the hipsters of today’s age (but, who knows? Jesus may love skinny jeans,) but what I am trying to suggest here is that Jesus was the hipster-est hipster of His time here on earth. Please feel free to watch and share the video version of this sermon. Good morning and welcome to another week here at Making Waves! We are back with our second week of the new Hipster Jesus series. For those of you unable to join us last week, here’s a quick recap (although you can always read the other blog post on this site), we talked about how Jesus was a hipster during His day and age. What is a hipster? A hipster is one who doesn’t follow the cultural trends of the day and age. Now, while I’m not implying that Jesus follows or agrees with the practices of the hippie movement of the 70s or the hipster movement of today, I do believe that during His time on Earth, Jesus definitely fought the norm of society and he certainly broke the norms of religion. It’s a new week here on the blog and I am excited to be with you all once again. As many of you know, we are starting a new series this week. The name of this series is a bit of an odd one, but it’s called, “Hipster Jesus.” For those of you who aren’t familiar with hipsters, Google defines a hipster as, “a person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream.” It derives from a modernization of the beatnik movement of the hippies during the rock’n’roll era. The hipsters of today and the hippies of a time past are and were discredited by society as being somewhat silly due to their unconventional beliefs and patterns. Now, I don’t want to dive too far into sociology (I only want this blog to be so long), but, during his time, Jesus was definitely a hipster. I’m N
